The Auld Toll Tavern

The ground floor of the building dates from the early 18th century although there was an earlier building on the site, it's foundations and cellar area having been utilised for the inn.

The Tavern was probably built to provide additonal income for the toll collector and
the Turnpike committee.
There were a number of Turnpike roads in the Dunfermline area.

These were stretches of roadway generally made up to a decent standard, better than the run-of-the-mill roads of the time.

Travellers were required to pay to use the road, the fee varying depending on the weight and size of the waggon or coach.  Individual horsemen were  liable to pay the toll as were pedestrians, in some areas.

As more details on the history of the building beomes available this page will be updated.
